In Paul Bennett’s talk at the Unlimited Design Symposium, he talked about IDEO’s open collaboration approach. Much of the idea is about opening up conversations with clients and users in order to gain insight, inspirations and ultimately better design solutions. In this process, clients might have to hear undesirable things to become more aware of situations. Similarly design collaboration also requires deisgners to hear feedback and take on others ideas. There is a certain amount of openness, bravery and no ego needed to have these conversations (just as there is at times on buses and striking up conversations)
I noted down 2 points that I think are key to any smart design process or anything involving community.
- Be brave enough to ask (be brave enough to learn)
- Be willing to host the conversation and know that you can’t control it
Why Talk? because
Conversations = Learning
Talking = Better Solutions
